Treasurer

Dr. Emanuel E. Canfora serves as NASO’s treasure since 2026. Emanuel is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Biology, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University, The Netherlands. His research focuses on the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in regulating whole-body energy metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic health in humans. In particular, he investigates how dietary components modulate intestinal microbial activity and how this influences adipose tissue function, inflammation, and cardiometabolic risk.
He has been actively involved in the scientific community of obesity research, serving as Director of the Early Career Network of the European Association for the Study of Obesity and as a board member of its New Investigator Unit. Through these roles, he has contributed to fostering collaboration, training, and career development opportunities for early-stage researchers in the field of obesity and metabolic health.

Sponsorship Officer

Dr. Agnes A.M. Berendsen was trained as clinical dietician, nutrition scientist and epidemiologist, and currently works as assistant professor within the chair group Nutrition and Disease, Human Nutrition and Health (HNH) at Wageningen University. Her research focuses on the relation between nutrition, metabolic health and disease prevention, with a particular focus on obesity treatment, both surgical and pharmacological, and their consequences on dietary intake, nutritional and health status. Currently, Agnes is principal investigator of the MONUCO-study, a large cohort study focusing on long-term nutritional and health effects of both surgical and pharmacological obesity treatment on women and their offspring. Moreover, she has led the HOBO-study in which the hormonal influences in measuring body composition of women living with obesity was studied. Within the 4TU.RECENTE program, Agnes contributes to the development of effective, personalized home-monitoring strategies for disease prevention and empowerment of patients living with obesity to play a role on their own health maintenance.
